What we do

point too
Your church needs you!

ARE you friendly, enjoy meeting people and have more than a passing interest in local history?

If so, the newly refurbished St Mary’s Church in Melton Mowbray needs you!

We’re very excited that most of the Re-ordering Project has been completed and we now have the church back. We’re even more excited to be opening our doors once more to visitors from Thursday (December 14th).

But that does mean that we need a dedicated team of volunteers to join our rota of Church Welcomers.

The task is quite simple. Engage visitors and be the first friendly face they come across when they enter our beautiful Grade I Listed building. Point out some of the interesting features in the church that dates back in part to 1170 and make them want to come back and see us again.

If you can spare a couple of hours a week, you could be just the people we need. Full training will be given of what is expected of you and due to safety we insist that two people are on duty at all times, so if you have a friend who is interested as well get them to sign up too!

arnold browneOne person who knows what it takes to be a Church Welcomer is Arnold Browne, pictured left, who has been doing the job for almost 20 years. Here he explains a bit about what the role entails:

"I have been on the rota of Church Welcomers for almost 20 years and have seen a number of changes in that time.  Church Welcomers have an important role to play in the life of St Mary’s – it is varied and interesting because we meet people from far and wide, both from this country and from abroad.

"Some days there are coach parties visiting the town and, in addition to buying their pork pies, they come along to see our church.

"A little knowledge of the church is essential as we do get questions from visitors, such as How old is the church? Size of the congregation?  How many bells are there? Details of the stained glass windows, but there are booklets that visitors can borrow and walk round the church with. Some ask about the up-keep of the church, fund-raising etc. The Christmas Tree Festival details are something that can be of interest to other churches.

"For me, Church Welcoming is both interesting and enjoyable."
