Cheese to please!

Nearly forty people got the chance to sample some of the finest cheeses in the British Isles in St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, on Thursday night (April 26th)... and helped raise money for the church Re-ordering Project at the same time.

This year's national Artisan Cheese Awards took place in the church during Thursday, and after the judging there was a chance for the public to sample some of their favourites at a special event in the church. Awards organisers got together with the church to host a ‘Cheese Feast’ where, for £5, cheese lovers got the chance to wander round and taste some of the finest cheeses in the British Isles, washed down with a complimentary glass of wine. They were then given the opportunity to take some cheese home with them.

Organiser of the awards Matthew O’Callaghan, of the Melton Mowbray Food Partnership, gave an informative talk during the evening on cheese making and the different types of cheeses and pointed out some of the things which the judges looked for.

More than 100 of the nearly 500 cheeses which were judged came from the Emerald Isle, produced by 25 of the top Irish artisan cheese makers. A number of them will travel over themselves with the cheeses to attend the Artisan Cheese Fair, at Melton Livestock Market, on the weekend of May 5 and 6.

The winners will be presented with their prizes at the Artisan Cheese Supper in St Mary's Church on Saturday, May 5th, starting at 4pm.
