Standard put to rest

A host of dignitaries joined the congregation of St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, on Sunday (April 29th) at a Parish Communion Service and the laying-up of the town's Royal British Legion Women's Section Standard.

Among those present were Lord-Lieutenant of Leicestershire Jennifer, Lady Gretton, DCVO, Mayor of Melton Mowbray Tejpal Bains, Lt. Col. Peter Roffey, OBE DL, president of Melton Royal British Legion and other members and officials from the branch.

The Women's Section of the branch stopped in 2016 after giving 92 years of loyal service to the ex-service community in Melton and the surrounding area. The demise of the section - which was formed on January 25, 1924, to support servicemen who had fought in the First World War - brought much sadness and disappointment to the long-serving committee members but they have carried on  holding functions and continue to raise funds for good causes under their new name 'The Keswick House Ladies Club.’

At Sunday's service there was a processional hymn followed by prayer and Act of Remembrance. This was followed by The Last Post, when three Standards were dipped. This was followed by the exhortation: They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, We will remember them.

A silence was followed by The Kohima Epitaph: When you go home, tell them of us and say, For their tomorrow, We gave our today. Reveille was then played and Standards lifted.

The Women's Section Standard was then handed to Melton Mowbray Team Parish Rector, the Revd Kevin Ashby, by Pat Wilson, who had been president of the Women’s Section since 1972 until its demise. He placed it in the South Transept of the church, where it will stay alongside other Standards. The service then followed and ended with the National Anthem.
