Work on church begins

The congregation of St James' Church, Burton Lazars, is so excited that work on the refurbishment of the building is now under way.

The final service in the Church before the work began was on Sunday, June 17th. Being the third Sunday in the month this would normally be a BCP communion service, but given that most of the furniture had been taken into storage by then, the ‘final’ service was a bit different! It was an Agape style simple communion around a centrally laid table using the benches which will be stored in the church.
Our first service out of the Church building will be on Sunday, June 24th and will be a Café Connect, which will be at Julia and Christopher’s home at 2 Cross Lane, Burton Lazars at the usual time of 11.15am. We are grateful for their hospitality as we cannot have the use of the Village Hall that day because of the village Summer Buffet preparations and lunch - which some of us will be going to enjoy afterward the service!

Most Sundays while we are out of the building we will follow our regular service pattern, but most Sundays we will be meeting in Burton Village Hall at our usual time of 11.15am. Everyone is welcome as always.
We expect the refurbishment work to take around 20 weeks, taking us into November. The plans, which were drawn up four years ago, will give us a toilet, a small kitchen/servery, a new meeting room/vestry plus a new heating and lighting system. To date we have raised more than £182,000 for the project which will cover the major work, but we will continue to fundraise and apply for grants so that we can achieve the right kind of finish.
Here at St James we are rejoicing in God’s wonderful provision and praying that the refurbished building, with its up-to-date facilities will give us new opportunities to serve our friendly rural community with the love of Christ.
We will post further updates throughout the project.
For further information about our services and the project itself please contact one of the church wardens, Janet (janetking476@gmail.com) or Jenny (jenpenge@aim.com).
