Parish Patchwork update

The Parish Patchwork has started to make appearances and I just thought I would bring everyone who has an interest in our Community Quilt, as it was known, up to date.

On May 4th, I took the Quilt to the Samworth Centre for the over 80’s club.  Jill Milner kindly invited me. Firstly, I must say that the Rector renamed it for me. So welcome to the Parish Patchwork, which sounds much nicer. I didn’t particularly like the name Community Quilt, not just because it’s not a quilt but because the lettering was too long to fit neatly.

The over 80’s were really interested in my little talk about how I wanted to make something for St Mary’s and they took part in helping to sew a couple of squares onto it. It was such a lovely afternoon. To view pictures taken at this event click here.

It’s a Patchwork!! So, it’s not perfect in any way.  It’s a mix of squares and pieces of material sewn together by mostly those who come to Saturday Morning @ St Mary’s throughout the year. It has been sewn by all different ages, which I think is amazing.

The Patchwork was started before the refurbishment in St Mary’s Church and it continued to grow all through the year when the church was closed.

Now I have started, with the help of Rosemary Hennig, to tack it altogether and soon will stitch it by hand to make it complete. I’m aiming to have it ready for the Christmas Tree festival in December. It may even be turned into a tree for the event, who knows?

Most recently I’ve taken the Patchwork to Broadoak Residential Home, to show the residents there and we had it on display during the Royal Wedding celebrations in St Mary’s Church.

If you know of a group that may be interested in seeing it, with the view of sewing a patch on it, please let me know.
