What we do

september 2018

The rector writes...

We had some disappointing news the other day… we won’t be having a Curate training in the parish next year. This news wasn’t totally unexpected, and we understand that the diocese only has a limited number of potential candidates to allocate… but it is disappointing nonetheless. So the curate’s house has been rented out for another year. We don’t benefit from the rental, I must add… that goes to the diocese.

We continue to be under-resourced in terms of full-time clergy here in Melton Mowbray Team Parish, but that doesn’t stop God continuing to do great things in and through our church family and our wider communities.

It also shows how important it is that all of us continue to use our God-given gifts to play our part in God’s work in our “patch”. We also need to continue to give generously to support his work. Thank you for all you are doing at present and will be doing in the future.

To do any “job” properly and effectively involves training. As St Paul writes (in 1 Corinthians 9:24-27) – “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last, but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. Therefore I do not run like someone running aimlessly; I do not fight like a boxer beating the air. No, I strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize.”

So, it’s time for a bit of training! From mid-September on we’ll be running another Alpha Course. This is a Christian training course which runs for 10 weeks (plus a day away) and will be on Tuesday evenings. It’s not only for those who want to know more about the Christian faith but also for those who want to deepen the knowledge they already have. Information will be available soon on the website, notice-boards and Weekly News. We will also need helpers… if you want to know more, have a word with me as soon as possible.

And, if you want to play your part in God’s work this summer, don’t forget our Holiday Club for the 5-11s, mornings in St Mary’s, Melton, from August 6th to the 10th… we’re still looking for helpers. And do try to come along to the Holiday Club Service at St Mary’s 10am on Sunday 12th… you’ll not only find out what the youngsters have been up to during their week of “Circus Shenanigans”, but you’ll be showing your support for the leaders and helpers… and we all need a bit of encouragement!
