The pelican on the Hartopp/Mansfield Hatchment in St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray.

A pelican in her piety

Pelicans have long been symbols in the Christian Church. The pelican stabs its breast to feed its young. It became a symbol of Christ sacrificing himself for man and because of this was frequently represented in Christian art.

Some time ago the Revd Kevin Ashby said he hadn’t found a pelican in St Mary’s Church, Melton Mowbray. (They often feature in stained glass or carvings around a building.)

Well, I don’t know if anyone else has looked closely at the Hatchments. Whilst trying to sort out Coats of Arms around the church recently, I found that the Hartopp/Mansfield Coat of Arms has the crest of, yes, a pelican in its piety.

Now on first glance you may think it is a swan on the crest but do look closely. It is a pelican and it is piercing its breast for its young.

Chiverton Hartopp was the Lord of the Manor at Welby. He married Catherine Mansfield. This is why the Hatchment is for Hartopp/Mansfield. Chiverton died in 1759. The monument to him is in the South Transept of St Mary’s Church.

The Hatchment for Hartopp/Mansfield is the one on the right-hand side of three hanging in the South Aisle.
