A night to remember

Take one talented choral society. Add four fabulous soloists, a brilliant organist and the multi-talented James Gutteridge. Put them all together in the beautifully refurbished St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, and use the recently restored Sir Malcolm Sargent Memorial Organ to accompany them.

The result? An evening on Saturday night (September 15th) that will live in the memory for many years to come.

When you hear that James Gutteridge is involved you know you are in for a real treat... and Saturday night was no exception.

On this occasion he was conducting Melton Mowbray Choral Society, of which he is Musical Director, for a performance of Vivaldi's Gloria and Haydn's Nelson Mass. And what a performance. Amazing, brilliant, superb... take your pick. Words are hard to find that adequately sum up how good it was. A big pat on the back to everyone involved.

The evening attracted, I am pleased to say, quite a few people and they were also treated to performances by soloists Caroline Sharpe, Joanna Gamble, Colin David Reed and Robert-John Edwards and Michael Overbury accompanying them on the church organ.

The evening helped raise money for CLIC Sargent, the cancer charity for children and young people.

*Melton Mowbray Choral Society will be taking part in a charity concert of music and song from film and stage with the Melton Band called 'A Night at the Movies' at Melton Theatre on Saturday night (September 22nd) at 7.30pm. For more details contact the theatre on 01664 851111.

Their next concert in St Mary's Church will be held on Saturday, December 22nd at 7.30pm when they will perform Stella Natalis by Karl Jenkins and lot of other favourites for a candlelight evening of seasonal music, mince pies and festive cheer.

*Melton Mowbray Choral Society is looking for new members. No previous choral experience is required, just a willingness to learn and be part of the team (although an ability to read music is always a bonus). Rehearsals start on Thursday, September 27th at 7.30pm in the Samworth Centre.
