What we do

Lunchtime Organ Recital

The next Lunchtime Organ Recital will take place in St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, on Tuesday, 13th November at 1pm when the recitalist will be Ron Berry, organist at St Luke’s Church, Thurnby.

Having graduated from Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, in 1973, Ron Berry began his Geography teaching career at Wellingborough School and later moved to Bedford Modern School.

After spending an exciting year on a teaching exchange in Canada, he arrived at Leicester Grammar School in 1984 as its first Head of Geography. The school was in its formative years at that time and so there were many exciting areas of school life in which to become involved.

Ron has been organist of St Luke’s Church, Thurnby, for more than 30 years and he has given regular organ concerts at St Mary’s Church, Melton and S. Margaret’s Church, Leicester, as well as in many smaller churches. He retired from teaching in 2014 and now runs the Old Leicestrians Association on a part-time basis. Ron devotes his time to music, drama (Syston QT Theatre Group), golf (not very successfully) and voluntary work... and, of course, to visiting all the places he has spent his working life teaching others about!

His programme on Tuesday will be: Flourish for an Occasion by Noel Rawsthorne (born 1929); Cornet Voluntary by Starling Goodwin (1711-1774); Chorale Improvisation on ‘Now thank we all our God’ by Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933); Elegy on the death of Pablo Casals by Kenneth Gange (born 1939); Carillon Sortie on St George by Charles Paterson (born 1954); Bolero de Concert by Louis Lefebure-Wely (1817-1869); Ladies in Lavender by Nigel Hess (born 1953) and Knightsbridge March by Eric Coates (1886-1957).

Admission to the recital is free and refreshments are available. A retiring collection is taken for the Organ Fund.

*The next recital will be given by  James Gutteridge, Director of Music, St Mary’s Church, Melton Mowbray, with Christmas Choir "A Festive Recital" on Tuesday, 11th December. Read more about our recitals and find out who will be playing by clicking here.
