Carols draw the crowds

A large crowd enjoyed singing carols round the Christmas trees in St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, on Saturday night at a special service as part of this year's Christmas Tree Festival.

The silly (sleepy) shepherd was the theme chosen by Melton Team Parish Rector, the Revd Kevin Ashby, for the service.

He started by choosing an angel (the Revd Dr Mary Barr), and then three wise shepherds and a silly shepherd from those attending to tell  the story of the shepherds and how they received the message to go to Bethlehem to see the newborn baby Jesus.

This was interspersed with favourite Christmas carols including Hark! the herald angels sing, Once in Royal David's city and While shepherds watched their flocks by night. The singing was led by the St Mary's Church choir with musical director James Gutteridge.

The wise shepherds went to see the baby but the silly shepherd couldn't be bothered with the angel's message and missed seeing it.

Shortly before the service began the choir entertained people who were inside the church looking round the trees.
