PRAYER COURSE 2

Grow closer to God in prayer

Earlier this year, when I was struggling to pray through the pain of a serious shoulder fracture, something that helped me greatly was a book by Pete Greig: “How to Pray: A simple guide for normal people”.

Pete Greig is the founder of the now international and interdenominational 24-7 Prayer movement. And he has recently launched the Prayer Course, which I’ll be running this Autumn. It’s an eight-week journey designed to help anyone - from absolute ‘beginners’ to life-long pray-ers - grow closer to God in prayer.

Each session takes its starting point from the Lord’s Prayer, and goes on to explore the riches of different aspects of Christian prayer: whether that’s enjoying God’s presence in praise and worship; asking God for things in prayer and wrestling with the problem of apparently unanswered prayer; spending time with God in silence, tuning in to hear God’s voice rather than doing all the talking ourselves; and how we can pray God’s kingdom come in the midst of a spiritual battle.

Nicky Gumbel (pioneer of Alpha and Vicar of HTB in London) writes in the Foreword to ‘How to Pray’: “Prayer brings us peace, refreshes our soul, satisfies our spiritual hunger and assures us of our forgiveness. Prayer not only changes us, it also changes situations.” Anyone who is interested in discovering more of the life-changing power of Christian Prayer is welcome to join this course.

Please note that the 1st session on Wednesday, 2nd October will be in St Mary Magdalene Church, Waltham on the Wolds. The other seven sessions, running on Wednesday evenings with the final session on 20th November, will all be held in St Mary’s Church, Melton Mowbray at 7.00pm for tea/coffee. Each session lasts one hour from 7.15pm - 8.15pm.

It would help us to know numbers, so if you’d like to come along, please let me know. Email vicarmary@meltonparish.org.uk  or call 01664 464293. - The Revd Dr Mary Barr.
