A nave decision

I know someone preached at St Mary’s Church, Melton Mowbray, years ago and said that “Coming up to for Communion is like a journey”… hence some folk sitting as far back in the nave as possible, whilst the Communion takes place up at the high altar. It really is quite a walk, writes the Revd Kevin Ashby.

I also know that when the Church building was closed for re-ordering and we met in Parkside a number of folk said how nice it was that we sat together as a family. It was good for the clergy too… you’re a long way off when we’re at the high altar!

And Communion is about the family of the Church coming together to share a meal together… difficult to do when we sit miles apart! We’re going to try using the nave altar for 8am services. It was either that or we all sat in the chancel, which is the only place where there’s a step… and one of the main reasons for the work on the floor was to make it flat and easy for all folk, including the clergy, some of whom are not good on their feet!

So, the nave altar it is. Let’s see how we get on.
