Churches open for private prayer

A number of churches in Melton Mowbray Team Parish are opening for private prayer.

St Mary the Virgin Church, Thorpe Arnold, opened on Saturday morning (July 18th) from 10am until 10.45am (and will open on Saturdays at the same time) and St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, opened up on Monday, July 13th from 10.30am until 11.30am and will open at this time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays.

St Bartholomew's Church, Welby, opened on Sunday (July 19th) from 3pm until 4pm. It will open monthly on every 3rd Sunday, and St James' Church, Burton Lazars, which will open monthly on Sundays from 11.15am - 11.39am for those shielding and 11.35am - 12.15pm  for those NOT shielding (starting on 2nd August, and then every 1st and 3rd Sunday).
You are very welcome to come and use our buildings for quiet, personal prayer during those times. But, please be aware that, due to social-distancing, seating is limited, toilet facilities are NOT available and we would ask you to abide by our safety measures.
*At the beginning of the re-opening of St Mary's Church, Melton Mowbray, the Paschal Candle, which we would normally light at the Easter Eve service, was lit, writes the Revd Kevin Ashby.

The candle symbolises Jesus' resurrection and so it's appropriate that it will be lit for when the church is open for prayer, to symbolise that we look forward not only to Jesus' coming again, but also being "raised" by God from this pandemic at some point in the future. Let's pray for his light on each one of us now during this pandemic.

A prayer you could use in church:

"Almighty God, may the symbolism of this lighted candle remind us of your abundant blessings and of your Spirit's gifts of hope and new life. May we be filled with your amazing grace! Once we were in darkness, but, as the Lord's people, we know we are in the light. Help us to live as people who show others that we belong to the light; through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen."
