OLD LECTERN PLAQUE

Who was J Adams?

St Bartholomew's Church, Welby, has at last been given the faculty for our new lectern and for disposal of the old one, writes Colin Beavis.

The old lectern has a memorial plaque ‘ presented by J Adams Welby Dec 1904’  and the Chancellor has instructed us to try to trace any family of the person who donated the original lectern.

None of our current members at Welby has any knowledge of who Mr(?) Adams was and in 1904 Welby was a Chapelry to St Mary's, Melton Mowbray, and we do not have church records from that time. Welby church wardens will be very interested to hear from anyone who may have any information. Contact Colin Beavis on 01664 851386 or email: colin.beavis@ntlworld.com

The new lectern is more fitted to current worship styles and has been dedicated to Mrs Amalia Hanbury, who was a long standing member of St Bartholomew's congregation up to her death in 2014.

An ancestor of mine, Stephen Adams, married an Elizabeth Stanhope in St Mary the Virgin, Thorpe Arnold, in June 1799 before moving to London. A Google-digitised book I've just found online called 'The History of Thurlaston Leicestershire' [to 1897] by John Ordish Hulme has a list on page 119 at the back of 'the older names in the Parish during the past century' including Adams and Stanhope. Unfortunately, my Adams ancestors moved to South Africa in the 1860s and, while I know Adams relations in London, I've never been told of any very distant cousins remaining in Leicestershire! Could there be some local Adams families who might know? Best wishes, Carol Barton (born Adams)
