Leonard James Pearce (Len) passed away peacefully at Waltham Hall Care Home on 23rd July 2020, aged 92.
Melton Mowbray gained a true gentleman and a lovely, caring, hardworking couple when Len and Gwen moved here in 1995 to be nearer to their daughter Sarah and her young family.
Len grew up in Hampshire, one of six brothers. He served in the RAF between 1945 and 1948. On his return to England he married Gwen in November 1949 and joined the Hampshire Constabulary, where he had risen to the rank of Chief Superintendent by the time of his retirement in 1978.
Following his retirement from the police Len worked as Administration and Finance Officer for Hampshire County Council (1978-1988).
Len and Gwen enjoyed a very active retirement in Hampshire and then in Melton Mowbray, where he was a founder member of the U3A, committee member, membership secretary and editor of the newsletter for many years as well as hosting scrabble and Mahjong groups.
He was a member of PROBUS and both Len and Gwen were active supporters of St Mary the Virgin Church, Thorpe Arnold, where he served on the DCC, Churches Together in Melton Mowbray and wrote monthly contributions for the Parish Magazine. He was also a keen gardener and many people proudly display his wonderful wood carvings in their homes.
Len was devoted to his wife, Gwen, and cared for her until her death in 2011. A wonderful couple who will be sadly missed by many.
Len’s funeral will be held at Grantham Crematorium on 12th August.
